Nissan Motor Co. announced the development of new modular powertrains aimed at optimizing production and lowering production costs of hybrid vehicles by 30%. New Nissan powertrains are expected to go into production in 2024.
Thanks to improved common parts that are the vehicle’s backbone, the automaker intends to cut the cost of hybrid models by 2026, bringing it closer to the price of gas-powered vehicles.
Aside from that, Nissan shared drawings illustrating two new powertrains. The first one is for e-POWER hybrid models, while the second one will be used in zero-emission vehicles. Their manufacturing process will be similar, opening the way for the consolidation and localization of production.
We are witnessing a booming trend among global automakers as they attempt to switch to the production of electric models. That being said, there are some Japanese manufacturers who still wish to invest in hybrid models.
This particular stance is explained by the alleged reluctance of consumers to switch to all-electric vehicles quickly. A certain portion of the buyers in the market will expect more advanced technology development, lower prices for electric cars, and the evolution of charging infrastructure.
Over 50% of Nissan's sales in the Japanese market were accounted for electric and hybrid vehicles in the second fiscal quarter of 2022, while the sales of hybrids prevailed.
The company spokesman emphasized that reliable batteries are the very missing piece of the puzzle in the production of electric vehicles. With that in mind, Nissan is developing solid-state next-generation batteries.
